There certainly is a group of high mountains that can be seen from Huaraz. One of them is Vallunaraju, at 5,686 m. (18,195 ft.) Our perspective and its nearness confuse our senses into thinking that it is the highest among the summits viewed from the city. This mountainous massif boasts a large glacial surface, which is crowned by two peaks at the summit. These are separated by a col, which is not necessarily where one decides to climb either summit. Since they are not particularly far away from each other, both can be climbed on the same day.
Its unusual quechua name describes its slanted appearance, wallu meaning cut and raju meaning mountain (cut mountain). It offers an ideal mountain environment and a great variety of possibilities for the development of mountain climbing, since it has appealing ridges, rock walls, mixed terrain and other features. These are irresistible for climbers' adventurous spirits, combining their experiences with the contrast provided by its white, icy slopes which come alive with fiery bursts of color at dusk. Alluring hues move our hearts and render our souls speechless as we are mesmerized by nature's harmony.
