ALFREDO QUINTANA FIGUEROA

Years of experience in the mountains have inspired me improve myself as a guide and to carefully deal with adversity in daily life. I am grateful to mountains since they purify my heart and soul. They enable me to live through unique, gratifying experiences which I am often fortunate enough to share with travelers as they discover the Andes , a world filled with magic, enchantment and color.

My work gives me the opportunity to visit various mountainous areas and learn about other peoples, ways of life and cultures. Developing trust and providing safety to my clients are fundamental for enjoying contact with nature. I have been fortunate enough to take part in challenges and efforts to make dreams come true, in which fatigue was overcome by enthusiasm and perseverance. Rewards include the beauty and greatness of the Pachamama, whom I respect and to whom I have entrusted my life, since she protects me and makes me feel safe. As a nature lover, I am saddened by the fact people are destroying our wonderful Earth. I can only hope that we become aware of what is happening before it is too late, so we may save our home and that of many other species. May these majestic mountains endure forever so my children can explore, enjoy and come to understand what was such an important part of my life and profession.

I feel fortunate to have been born in a place surrounded by beautiful mountainous areas and t olive in a country that house magical spots in its three regions. While exploring and visiting the Peruvian Andes, one can share adventures and experiences that will surpass one's expectations.

My dream of being a High Mountain Guide began with this purpose in mind. Today I work with great responsibility and integrity, guiding adventurous tourists or expedidions who decide to visit dthis warm country. I feel like an ambassador who seeks to share a peoples' warmth and the greateness of its mountians. I think my work is essential for promoting our culture and scenic beauty. The years I've spent working as a guide have been benefitial for improving the quality of my work as an expedition leader and to understand the psychology of different groups of people, by providing safety and trust that become strenghthened by a cultural integration.

Huascaran 's greatness and splendor have influenced a great part of my life, since I always perceived it as a great challenge to be reached some day. My dreams were encouraged by watching climbers who visited my community year after year with the purpose of crowning its icy summits. I had been working as a donkey driver since I was very young, until one day I was asked to work as a porter to Camp I. That was my first contact with a fascinating new world, filled with mystery and excitement. Not long after, my dream to reach a summit in the Peruvian Andes came true.

This is how my love for mountains and my profession as High Mountain Guide was born. Today lead large expeditions responsibly, safely and with dedication. I keep alive the customs of my Indigenous ancestors, who are respectful of Pachamama and Apus, to whom we entrust our lives since the first day of the expedition.

In the eighties, I discovered a feeling that gave my life direction, which I have tried to fulfill along with great yearnings that have always been part of my life. Today, mountains mean adventure and dreams come true, where I seek refuge to find peace and tranquility. These emotions then turn into happiness upon reaching an enigmatic summit. Nature always teaches me something new, thereby enriching my personality and soul.

The terms mountaineering and High Mountain Guide describe what once was a dream and today has become my profession. However, my philosophy makes a distinction between a high mountain guide and a mountain adventurer. Being a High Mountain Guide makes me responsible fore leading and providing safety to my clients when fulfilling my role as leader of the expedition. On the other hand, as an athlete, I strive to satisfy feeling in my Andinist heart, constantly seeking new challenges to fill me with energy and passion for this sport.
