At 6,768 m .(22,200 ft.) , Huascaran South is the highest mountain in Peru and has been called "The Highest Tropical Mountain in the World." It is one of the most breathtaking mountains due to its size and impressive beauty. Its twin South and North peaks are the highest and most visible in the Cordillera Blanca, ruling the entire Callejon de Huaylas valley. Its summits are divided by an enormous col, allowing us to see a huge glacial plain in the distance. Its colossal faces are covered by crevasses, bare glacial areas and immense serac masses. They have attracted numerous expeditions from all parts of the world since the early 1900s. At 6,655 m. (21,296 ft.) , the North peak is the lower of the two summits.
MOUNTCLIMB TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE's library indicates Huascaran was first climbed by Annie Peck in 1908, becoming one of the few high peaks in the planet to be conquered by a woman. The South peak, at 6,768 m .(22,200 ft.) , remained unexplored until 24 years later. In 1932, encouraged by scientific curiosity and athletic ability, a German-Austrian expedition which included H. Bernard, E. Hein, H. Hoerun, Kinzl and E. Scheider as some of its members finally crowned Huascaran 's South peak. The North peak is less frequently climbed and slightly more difficult.
Huascaran 's peaks are characterized by not presenting a particularly complicated ascent in terms of technique. On the other hand, it does provide the opportunity to take part in a constant battle against the altitude, wind conditions and low temperatures. Simply because these are the normal routes does not mean they are exempt from certain difficulties. It is fairly common to encounter changes in weather conditions even during the dry season. Occasionally, heavy clouds may cover the route decreasing visibility in this immense glacial mass. There is a also a risk of falling blocks of ice, avalanches and crevasses. Being familiar with this mountain's peculiar characteristics is fundamental for climbing any of its peaks. It is also necessary to be acclimatized and have knowledge of high mountain climbing techniques of medium difficulty.
In order to climb any of these mountains, the col must first be reached, to then go on to climb either peak. Our reward will be a view of unimaginable beauty from either summit and the tremendous sense of accomplishment and success after one's efforts. You will be in awe as you gaze upon the majestic Cordillera Blanca, stretching out before you.
