Artesonraju is probably one of the most beautiful peaks in Cordillera Blanca and the world. This magnificent ice pyramid is located in the Paron Valley , between the Santa Cruz Valley to the north and that of Llanganuco to the south. Seen from the north, its spectacular shape is reminiscent of the " Paramount Peak ", the Paramount Pictures trademark.
Straight lines forming this perfect gigantic pyramid at 6,025 m. (19,762 ft.) , have enabled it to become a classic in its own right, especially because of its two main routes. The first is that of the north ridge, accessible through the Santa Cruz Valley . The second, the southeast face, is accessible through the Paron Valley . This is a privileged valley that has an impressive view of the beautiful peaks, majestic vertical ice and rock walls as well as fascinating large mixed couloirs which surround it. It is one of the most spectacular valleys since most of the summits are over 6,000 m. (19,680 ft.) high. One of the most noteworthy rock masses is the aptly named Sphinx, frequently visited by rock climbing lovers. Finally, we'll be able to see Lake Paron in the middle of the valley, serene in the midst of this great natural scene.
Artesonraju's southeast face is located at the end of the valley with the same name. It is well-know due the demanding level of expertise in ice and snow climbing it requires at all times. This face presents an elevation gain of approximately 900 m, fascinating us with its long snow and ice plate and providing a marvelous view of the mountains which surround the valley as we move up the slope. MOUNTCLIMB TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE has documented the first ascent up this mountain which took place in 1969 by climbers K. Schecenbach, H. Saler and K. Sussmilch. It was rated D (difficult). During the following years, several interesting ascents took place and some new routes were established. It is important to recall that the Artesonraju summit ridge is exposed due to the fragility of its cornices. Furthermore, there is great risk of avalanches at the beginning of the season due to its slope, which tends to accumulate snow.
